Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
