Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
