Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
