European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
