RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
